Instrumentation and Control Technician

Instrumentation and Control Technicians (AKA "Industrial Instrument Mechanics") install, repair, maintain, and adjust instruments used to measure and control processes in industries such as mining, pulp and paper manufacturing, petrochemical production, nuclear, thermal and hydro-power generating, and water treatment, among others.

Some of the instruments include primary control elements, transmitters, analyzers, sensors, detectors, signal conditioners, recorders, controllers and final control elements. They are used in industry to measure and control variables such as pressure, flow, temperature, level, motion, force and chemical composition.

Instrumentation and Control Technician is a nationally designated trade under the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program.

Recommendations

The following education is recommended: Grade 12 diploma, including English 12, Math 11, and Physics 11.

 

The Apprenticeship Program comprises Levels 1-to-4 of progressive technical training, with each Level taking 10 weeks (300 hours) to complete. In addition, apprentices are required to accumulate 6,000 hours of work-based training.

 

A Foundation Program can jump-start your career without employer sponsorship by supplying the knowledge and skills to enter directly at Level 2, after 21 weeks of training.

 

Applications for the Industrial Instrumentation & Process Control Technician Diploma program open up every October 1st for the following September start date.
